Breamore DISTANCE: 6 miles MAP: OS 184, Salisbury & The Plain Click HERE for full page map of start point START: On the main A338 through Breamore, look out for the convenience store in the layby. Park either in the layby or in one of the two lanes either side of the store.
THE WALK: Depending on where you are parked, walk to the lane to the left of the shop as you look at it which goes behind the school. Walk up the lane a little way to go onto a gravel track which takes you to round two sides of the left-hand side of the green. Go through a gateway at the far corner and walk down the small lane to reach a second quiet road. Turn right along this road and then turn left under some low voltage power lines onto a footpath which skirts to the left of the farm ahead.
Pass the farm and skirt the right hand side of the field ahead. When a small road appears down a bank on the left, go over the bank and turn left onto the lane. Pass under major power lines to reach a road junction. Turn right and walk up the hill and turn left at the next junction. Walk along this lane and just before you reach a junction, turn left onto an Avon Valley Footpath signed path. Walk down the hill until you reach the main A338. Turn right on the pavement to pass (or enter if you wish) the Tudor Rose Inn. After passing the inn, cross the road when you reach tearooms and follow the footpath opposite through a farm. Turn left at the end of the buildings to cross the River Avon by way of a suspension bridge.
After passing through a gate at the end of the bridge, follow the path ahead as it crosses bridges and stiles and continue to follow it until you reach Folds Farm. Walk through the farm and exit over a stile by a cattle grid. Follow the track round to the left to reach a minor road and immediately turn left off the road on a track climbing steeply up a bank. Cross a track ahead and follow the path up by a fence to a house. Bear right then left again off the track to follow a path up to the top of the hill. Follow the path as it meanders between the steep bank on your left and the road on the right to eventually emerge by a car park at a viewpoint at Deadman Hill. Continue along the road to reach a T-junction.
Turn left downhill and then take the first right following the Avon Valley Path signs through Woodgreen to reach the village green and cricket pitch. Aim for the post box ahead and cross the road here to take the gravel track opposite. Bear left at a 'totem pole' of house signs and follow the track to a stile at its end. Cross the stile and follow the left edge of the fields ahead over more stiles to emerge onto a lane. Turn right then left to follow the sign for Downton.
After 300 yards, opposite a pathway to a church, turn right to cross a bridge and go through a gate on the opposite side of the River Avon. Bear left here and follow the well signed footpath as it is signs you to go right along the left hand edge of a field. Keep following the signs over more bridges to emerge onto a track. Turn right and follow the track towards South Charford Farm. Follow the main track through the farm and carry on to reach the main A338 road.
Cross the road to follow the track opposite up the hill. Turn left at the top by some trees on to a well-signed footpath along the left edge of a field and through a kissing gate. After the tall stile with a handrail to the right, bear right to cross a stile in the right-hand fence of the next field. Bear left to cross another stile into Breamore Churchyard. Follow the path to the right, then left to leave the churchyard. Follow the road, past Breamore House entrance, ahead to a junction and head across, following the sign for Breamore. Follow the road downhill back into the village and your transport.
A guestbook visitor ( Chloe Newman from Salisbury) writes: A brilliant resource when I can't be bothered to make up my own walks with the OS map. Did your walk around Breamore a couple of years go - very enjoyable. Now I'm back for more! Home / Salisbury & Wessex / New Forest / Guestbook / Links / Your page / Other Interests
