Brixton Deverill

DISTANCE: 6 miles

MAP: OS Landranger 183; Yeovil & Frome

START: In the lane leading to St. Michael's Church. This is the lane leading off the through road by the bridge over the River Wylye at 864386. For a full page road map showing the start point, click here.

THE WALK: Walk back down the lane from where you have parked, leaving the church behind you to reach the main road through the village. Turn right to cross the River Wylye. Take the next lane on the left and walk up the road to reach Cliff House. Continue ahead on what is now a chalky track.

Head steadily uphill until you reach a point where the track levels out and then begins to descend steeply. Before the descent, take the track on the left to reach a metal gate. Go through this and also through the second gate ahead. Immediately turn left and climb the hill, following the line of the fence on the left.

Aim for the barn which you can see ahead of you. Go through the gate to the left of the barn and cross the track to continue onwards. Follow the line of the track up Cold Kitchen Hill. You will pass a triangulation point at the top. Continuing on, a fence merges from the left. Follow the fence line, passing an old warning beacon, until the fence turns across your path.

Depending on the state of the fields ahead, you have two choices of routes. Both carry straight on, but if you walk with the fence on your left, you will be on a bridle path, or on a footpath if the fence is on your right. Carry on until you reach a point where there are two gates close to each other in the fence. Here, you want to be carrying on in the same direction up the hill with the fence on your right.

Near the top of the hill, pass through patches of gorse and bear right to where the fence disappears into a hedge. Here you can cross the fence by lifting the top bar of a plank-built stile. Turn immediately right, then immediately left to walk down the field with a fence to your left. Pass a wooded area on your left to reach a gate.

Go through the gate into the wood ahead to follow a well-defined track. After a steep descent, eventually emerge from the wood to a gate into a field. Go through the gate and practically do a U-turn to walk round the right-hand edge of the field with Bidcombe Wood on your right.

When you reach two gates, ignore the wooden one leading into the woods and go through the metal one. Follow the line of the wood through a few fields until you eventually reach a gate on your right with a ladder stile. Climb over and follow the fence for a short distance to another metal gate. Go through this one and then turn left to walk to the bottom of the field.

Turn right, following a grass track until you reach a farm entrance. Here look out for wooden gate on your right. Go through this onto a second grassed track and follow this past the buildings of Rye Hill Farm. At a crossroads of tracks and paths, the track turns right; follow it as it soon climbs up through the edge of woodland and emerges onto a cross track.

Turn left and follow the track down to the road you walked up earlier when you passed Cliff House. Retracing your original route, turn left down to the main B3095 road. Turn right back over the river and then left back to the church and your transport.
