Burley DISTANCE: 6 miles
MAP: OS Outdoor Leisure 22; New Forest. For a full page road map showing the start point, click here
START: 212031 Either in the public car park in Burley at the back of the Queens Head pub or you will be fine during busy periods at the Forestry Commission car parks just up the hill on the right as you drive away from the pub.
THE WALK: Leave the car park behind the pub through a small gate at the opposite end from the vehicular entrance. Turn right in Burley's main street. Walk along her until you see a signed footpath on the right. This takes you along a field edge avoiding the road as it goes round two sharp bends. Just after rejoining the road, turn left up a driveway looking for a footpath that goes through a small gate to the right of a set of large double gates.
Follow the footpath up the field edge on the right of the private drive. The path remains fenced in as it continues through a wood and eventually emerges on a gravel/dirt road. Turn right to pass some cottages. After about 400 yards, at the top of a small incline, just before the road bears right, turn left onto an obvious path that leads away down a slope through bracken. Keep making your way downhill until you reach a track running left/right through the valley.
Go steadily up an incline still generally following the fencing until you reach a track leading out of the wooded area. Turn left onto this track and follow it down to a road. Cross the road to reach a large pond ahead. Look out for a sand track going over the ridge at the back of the pond and aim for this, passing with the pond on your left.
Follow this track for about 3/4 miles until you nearly reach a gravel track leading to the entrance to the old gravel quarry on your right. Here, the route forks to the left to start descending. Aim for the right of the trees ahead.
Eventually you reach what was obviously a railway bridge over a track ahead. Cross the track at this point. At the bottom of the next slope you will see two obvious tracks ahead. Take the left hand of the two up the slope to pass by a golf course on your right. Follow the track in the same general direction back to the Forestry Commission car park just outside Burley. If you are parked in the village, continue through the car park to the road and turn left back down the hill to the Queens Head. Useful links: Forestry Commission
