DISTANCE: 8 miles

MAP: OS Landranger 184 - Salisbury and The Plain and OS Landranger 195 Bournemouth and Purbeck

START: Parking in The Square in Cranborne or opposite the school in the car park. For a full page road map showing Cranborne, click here.

THE WALK: Leave the Square and walk away from the main road through Cranborne along High Street and Salisbury Street. Turn left along the track between numbers 15 and 17 Salisbury Street. Follow the track as it leads you along the valley with the River Crane and the Manor House to your left. Pass through a gate and proceed through Manor Farm. Remain on the track keeping your direction straight ahead to reach Cranborne Farm. Turn right at the tracks end next to a large fuel tank and follow the track ahead as it gradually climbs.

At the top of the hill, turn left at a crossroads and remain on this track as it climbs its way to the top of Pentridge Hill. Through a gate, take the left hand track down into the valley with quite a considerable view on a clear day. On the valley floor, turn left and make your way along what can be quite a wet but thankfully short section of track. Remain on the track as it bears left, then turn right to follow the right hand fence uphill and enter a second field. According to the OS map, at this point the footpath runs diagonally left across the field at this point, but as this field seems to always be well ploughed or cropped, it will be easier to walk next to the fence on the right hand side of this field. At the fields end, just behind a service garage, turn left and walk on the grassy footpath between the two banks of Ackling Dyke. At the bottom corner of the field, bear left and follow the left hand side of the next field with a wood on your left. Again the path soon bears across fields, but it may be easier to stay on the left hand side of the field. Pick up a track which comes from the woods on the left and cross the field on this track to the woods opposite. Turn left here and continue south, soon picking up a track which runs along the valley floor with a small stream to your left.

Turn right on a track at a T-junction and remain on this path for about half a mile until you reach a bridge at Bowldish Pond. Cross the bridge and follow the track as it climbs the hill ahead of you. When a wood is reached near the top of the hill, pass through the gate on your right and continue along in the same direction with the fence line to your left. The path will eventually take you to a track T-junction after climbing a stile. Turn right and proceed along the track upon which you came down earlier. Remain on this track as it leads you back to Cranborne and your start point.
