Overton DISTANCE: 10 miles MAP: OS 185 Winchester & Basingstoke START: Grid reference 515497, Overton. If arriving from Whitchurch and the A34, enter Overton on the B3400 and turn right at the traffic lights in the town. There should be plenty of parking spaces on the side of the road between the traffic lights and the Greyhounds pub. A full page map showing the start point is available here.
THE WALK: Leave the town centre by walking up south up the hill away from the traffic lights and turn right at the Greyhounds public house. Continue east along this lane as it becomes Dellands road and follow it to it's end where it turns sharp right. Here, turn left along a track and follow it as it gently climbs then drops down again to Turrill Hill Farm. Stay upon the track to turn right just past a big barn and walk westerly for one hundred yards or so away from the farm.
Following yellow way markers, soon turn left to follow a path on the right hand side of a field next to a tree line as it undulates and reaches Abra Barrow at the top of the second gentle incline. Walk downhill after passing the barrow to reach a right hand turn approximately 200 yards past. Your route is now downhill on the left hand side of a field to reach a house. Turn right here to reach the buildings of Laverstoke Grange Farm. Turn right to pass through the farm and reach a lane which you now follow to reach a T-junction at New Barn Cottages.
Cross the road here to follow the footpath beyond which climbs away from the lane and takes you along the right hand edge of fields to reach a second lane. Turn right along this very quiet lane for just under a mile to reach a track on the right which you follow through farm buildings next to the road and past Southfield Farm. Stay on the track as it descends to end at a stile into a field. Turn right and walk along the right hand edge of the field next to the tree line. Your path climbs to the fields' top corner where you go over another stile and continue ahead. When you reach a track on a bend, turn left and follow the route downhill to cross a river and reach the B3400 in Laverstoke.
Turn left along the B3400 for a short way until you turn right up Watch Lane next to the telephone box. Follow the lane uphill until you reach a lane on the right which leads to Home Farm and should also be signposted to the rugby club. Follow this to turn left at Home Farm. When the road swings right towards the rugby club, continue straight on, going uphill and over the railway line. Your track passes a water tower and ascends the hill. Near the bottom, turn right and follow a straight tree lined track east. Ignoring a signposted left turning after a third of a mile or so, after a mile, at a crossroads of tracks, turn right and head southeast downhill, crossing the railway line and reaching the hamlet of Southington. After passing the first couple of houses on your right, take the left hand lane bearing away from the village. You now need to stay on the lane close to the River Test, but not crossing the river for just under a mile until you have passed St. Mary's Church in Overton. At this point turn right, cross the river and emerge at the town centre by the traffic lights. Home / Salisbury & Wessex / New Forest / Guestbook / Links / Your page / Other Interests
