Rhinefield

DISTANCE: 7 miles

MAP: Outdoor Leisure 22 - The New Forest

START: This walk starts from Brock Hill car park which is along Rhinefield Ornamental Drive at grid reference 266057. Leaving Lyndhurst on the A35, the drive is signposted on the left. The car park is soon found on the right as you travel along the drive. For a full page map showing the start point, click here.

THE WALK: Leaving the car park, return to Rhinefield Ornamental Drive and turn left. Turn quickly right onto the first gravel track. Follow this gravel track, and remain on it as it bends sharp right. About 150 yards after this bend, turn left along the soil and grassy track, which you follow through a gate at its far end. Cross a small bridge and stream and bear left on a grassy path which leads you through trees. Keeping on the path, you may have to slightly divert to avoid the odd fallen tree, but you will reach a footbridge over a stream. Cross the footbridge and continue around to the left, following the footpath. After about 400 yards or so, turn right at a cross path on a grassy trail. If you start to slightly ascend through silver birch coppices, you would have missed the turning so will have to retrace your steps.

Follow this path until you reach a T-junction of paths a few yards short of a small brook in front of you. Turn left and follow the path which meanders with the brook always a few yards away from you to the right. Do not cross the brook until the path comes out at a small clearing opposite some cottages. At this point, cross the brook and turn right along a quiet lane. Continue on the lane until it turns sharp left up a hill. Look out for a barrier on the right-hand side of the road at this point, opposite a cottage called Jessamine. Turn right through the barrier and follow the straight track that leads away from the road. Walk to the end of the track to where it meets a shallow drainage ditch running left/right in front of you.

Turn right and follow the drainage ditch for a short way. Aim for the forest gate ahead of you which you go through to take the left-hand track of the two in front of you. Turn left at the next track junction and follow this gravel track over a bridge and onwards to another track crossing. Turn left and follow this track to a gate. Go through the gate and continue straight ahead to soon fork right. Through the gate, continue along the track for 3/4 of a mile to pass through another gate.

Through this next gate, turn right at the next T-junction then pass through another gate and maintain the same general direction to reach Bolderwood Bridge. Cross the stream and continue along the gravel track ahead as it curves right and continues with heath land away on the left of you. Remain on the track to reach a minor road where you continue straight ahead. Take the turning on you right which crosses a stream and is signposted to Alderidgehill Cottage and Campsite. The track passes the entrance to the camp site which is closed in the winter, and leads you past Alderidgehill Cottage. Just past the cottage, opposite a no cycling sign, turn sharp right to strike out ahead across the heath. Aim for the footbridge you should just about see in the distance. Cross the footbridge and continue ahead as the path bears very slightly left passing bushes to reach a second bridge.

Cross the footbridge and turn left on a path which takes you through a gateway into a field. Continue directly ahead across the field through a gateway and along a grassy track which meets a gravel track at a T-junction. Turn right for about 140 yards to a fork. Follow the lesser track on the left to reach another gravel track onto which you turn left. Remain on the track as it turns sharp right and continue along it to reach the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive. Turn left onto the drive and cross the small bridge ahead. Immediately turn right and walk along the stream side path with the brook to your right. Continue alongside the stream until you reach a low concrete ford type bridge. Turn right to cross the stream here and continue along the gravel track ahead. Maintain your direction on this gravel track and remain on it as it bends right to reach the Ornamental Drive. Turn right, then right again to enter the car park.

My friend and I did the Rhinefield walk last weekend. We're new to this and found the instructions easy to follow and the walk nicely varied. Thanks for going to the trouble of posting the walks!
